A frequent question which I see around bone conduction headphones is whether or not they can be heard by others in your general area. As we all know this can be a large letdown on normal headphones which shoot sound into your ear canals that some will bounce out to be heard.
Can others hear your music with bone conduction headphones? In most typical use cases, they are totally silent to other people around you as they vibrate on the bone sending the information without the sound being created. The only time this can be heard is on very loud volumes and higher bass as this causes vibrations.
Let's talk about what the difference is between why you can hear air conduction headphones and why you can't hear bone conduction headphones and what drives this difference.
Why Can Others Not Hear Bone Conduction Sound?
The sound is transmitted through vibrations on your actual cheekbones instead of via air vibration. This difference in how sound is transmitted is why they are much quieter than their air-based cousins.
I can say in my own use that it is very quiet and my wife says in almost all circumstances she can't hear them, it appears that only when I play music with bass and the vibrations can make a low sound that people are able to almost imperceptibly "hear".
Can You Hear Others While Wearing Bone Conduction Headphones?
This is where this technology really can shine as these don't block your ear canals. Due to this being the case it is very easy to wear them and hear everything that is going on around you!
The other benefit is that others don't think of them as headphones so they will talk to you normally without telling you to stop playing them before. I wear them while I work as it allows me to keep myself occupied and I then get sidetracked much less. I use the Trekz Air currently but the next ones I will purchase are the Aeropex!
Final Thoughts on Can Others Hear Your Music With Bone Conduction Headphones?
In the last few years, the bone conduction methods have improved dramatically and have turned a side-show device into a prime time contender. I love them for running as I can hear everything around me including traffic and other communications.
I would highly recommend them as I use them and their almost 4-hour battery on my car rides runs and additionally while rock climbing and hiking.
